This
Month on the Farm...
April 2008
Happy
Spring,
It’s been some time since I’ve written.
Winter in the North Country stretched on this
year just as it did in so many places.
The snow has melted revealing a plethora of
green foods for the wildlife that roams our farm. Mud
season presents a different set of challenges than
that of the wintertime.
Of these, waiting patiently to sow my first
seeds seems the hardest of all.
I wish you abundance and joy as well as
patience and endurance, as you set out on your own
garden adventures.

Spring
House Cleaning
This time
of year many of us look forward to giving our homes
a thorough cleaning. There is something so very gratifying about scouring a rarely
tended to kitchen cupboard.
Sifting through old attic boxes and figuring
out just how much stuff one has for the rummage sale
can be downright exhilarating.
Springtime is also the period when our bodies are
most responsive to cleansing—usually referred to
as detoxification.
This process involves eliminating toxins
and mucous from the system.
It has
been suggested that many common and acute health
problems can be reduced or eliminated with the
support of a good detoxification program. Herbs are
an important aspect of any cleansing program as they
help rid the body of toxins while also supporting
and toning major organs in order to help them
process a higher than usual level of waste.
Traditionally,
a wide number of herbs have been used to facilitate
this process. I will tell you about a few of my
favorites. Dandelion
root (Taraxacum officinale) has a
cleansing action that helps to remove waste from the
liver and gallbladder and facilitates better
functioning of the kidneys.
Mineral rich Nettle
(Urtica dioica) has diuretic actions, which
make it a particularly effective detox herb.
Burdock
root and seed (Arctium lappa) can
reduce the level of heavy metals that accumulate in
our systems.
Having used these three herbs with good results, I
have blended these plants to make Mind’s Eye’s
popular cleansing formula, Dandy
Detox Tea.
This nice tasting tea is an appropriate
accompaniment for most detox programs.
As with all
health decisions, do your research before starting
any cleansing program and be certain to select one
appropriate for your needs and lifestyle.
Work Worth Mentioning
It is always an
inspiration to come across family businesses doing
good work. Several
months back I was pleased to learn about Babies
4 Peace, a homegrown, family company
launched by Anni and Jonathan Rodgers.
This socially conscious couple is striving to
make a significant impact on the lives of
war-impacted children around the world by donating
5% of their profits to the international charity War
Child which assists children in Iraq,
Afghanistan, Bosnia Herzegovina and elsewhere who
have become the victims of armed conflict. The
Rodgers sell custom-designed onesies for infants
available in all-natural, organic fabrics.
Check
out their site.
These items make great gifts and support a
very worthy cause.
