July
2009
Happy
summer,
My
family and I are just back from 10 glorious days of
vacation. Motherhood is fun most any time, but
it’s hard to get better than toddlers, sand, and
sun.
Special
circumstances led us to travel during the busiest of
times on the farm. Despite initial twinges of guilt,
it felt so very good to make fun with family a top
priority. Sure we’ve come back to weeds taller
than our kids, but the peas, plump and sweet, and
the swiss chard shouting out to be picked seem to
forgive us.
Upcoming
Events
The
wild herbs on our farm were not troubled by our
absence at all. This week, should the rain stop
falling, we will harvest yarrow and red clover. We
are also busy preparing for our booth at the Potsdam
Summer Fest
on Saturday
July 11th. Stop by and say hello, if you
are in the area.
Welcome
Tiffany
I
am extremely grateful to have the help of apprentice
Tiffany Conn this summer. A graduate student at the
Crane School of Music, Tiffany will be helping us
create a new culinary herb garden. Featuring all of
our favorite kitchen herbs, this garden will be used
for the cooking classes that we hope to offer at the
farm next year. It was pure joy to hear Tiffany’s
beautiful voice outside the window singing as she
began the work at hand. The plants are sure to
thrive!
New
Products at Mind’s Eye Herbary
Calendula is among my
favorite of herbs. Just one look at this vibrant
yellow flower and its energy is apparent.
Calendula
has long been renowned for it’s ability to soothe
dry or irritated skin.
An
anti-inflammatory herb with some antimicrobial
activity, no herbal medicine kit is complete without
it.
Our
calendula
oil,
first blended for a dear friend’s new baby, is now
available. Our formula contains only organic
calendula, olive oil,and vitamin E and is perfect
for individuals with sensitive skin. Use this
topical oil for diaper rash, chapped and sunburned
skin and other such irritations. If interested in
making your own salves, this oil is an excellent
base for doing so.
Mind’s
Eye calendula
cream contains the same important herb and
is blended with olive oil, vitamin E, beeswax,
lanolin and coconut oil. Although originally
intended for use by people, your animals will love
it too! We’ve recently received positive feedback
from an organic dairy farm where the cream is
applied to their cows!
In
the Neighborhood
Living
in the North Country means we are surrounded by a
vibrant community of farmers, artists, crafts people
and small business owners. It is a privilege to
enjoy the fruits of our neighbors’ endeavors and a
joy to spread the word.
We’ve
enjoyed getting to know Renee and Roy Smith of Sugar
Hill Farm and Sugar Hill Day Care. The Smiths raise grass fed beef, which they sell through a
thriving CSA. Their enthusiasm is contagious as they
discuss the organic practices employed on their
picturesque farm. Renee is also owner of Sugar Hill
day care. Here children are served local foods that
including whole organic milk, fresh baked breads,
veggies that the children help grow, pasture raised
eggs and their own grass-fed beef. For more
information visit their website www.sugarhilldaycare.vpweb.com.

in Touch
We love hearing from you and hope you’ll keep in
touch. Likewise, we look forward to sharing our news
from the farm with you. If you aren't already signed

to share your email with anyone.
In peace,
Rebecca
